About GateWay Community College

Welcome to GateWay Community College in Phoenix, Ariz., one of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges. Founded in 1968, GateWay is a comprehensive community college that is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

GateWay is a leading institution in the development of academic and occupational programs designed to meet the demands of business and industry. The college's six academic divisions specialize in business, healthcare, information technologies, industrial technology, nursing and university transfer.

The university transfer programs allow students to easily transfer to one of the state universities. The Maricopa Community Colleges have an alliance with Arizona State University (ASU), which is local to GateWay.

GateWay sits between ASU's Tempe and Phoenix campuses and has a Light Rail stop (public transportation) on campus.

At GateWay, enrollment fluctuates throughout the year and class sizes range from 12 to 40 people per class. The college welcomes and encourages diversity, bringing a rich cultural mix to the campus.

Admissions

It is strongly recommended that all required paperwork be submitted at least 6 months in advance from the time you wish to begin attending GateWay. Suggested deadlines for classes beginning in January (spring semester) is the previous July 1. Suggested deadline for classes beginning in August (fall semester) is the previous November 1.

Information for International Students

International students work very closely with the International Student Office (ISO) to become familiar with the college and services. Students must be high school graduates or equivalent and also prove evidence of financial support and English proficiency as follows:

All required documents must be submitted in their original official form, no scanned documents or copies will be accepted. Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended must be mailed directly to GateWay Community College, Attention: Admissions and Records.

Transcripts must be translated into English and evaluated by an International Transcript Evaluation Service (PDF).

Students must complete pages 2 and 3 of the International Student Application (PDF), page 4 is optional (depending on applicability), sign and submit in full to the GateWay ISO Coordinator of Student Services.

Financial aid for international students is not available through GateWay. Students must come fully prepared to meet all financial obligations, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Books and supplies
  • Medical insurance
  • Housing and living expenses

Students will find the intimate campus situated in an urban setting very welcoming. Support services and amenities found on larger community college campuses are available, along with student clubs, organizations, volunteer and leadership opportunities.

One club in particular, the World Explorers Club, is a fun, educational and diverse club comprised of students from the U.S. and around the world.

The purpose of the World Explorers Club is to promote, support and understand the diversity of cultures all over the world, as well as to provide a supportive environment for new and returning international students. To learn more, visit www.gatewaycc.edu/world-explorers-club.

In addition, the college hosts many events that provide opportunities to get involved, from planning to participation.

Student services are also available to help with your studies or preparing for a career. Tutoring in various subject matter is available through the Learning Center, and the Library provides guidance with research as well as a quiet place to study. The Career Center provides interest inventory assessments and guidance on writing a resume and cover letter, as well as interviewing.

There are several apartment complexes around the campus that are conveniently located off the Light Rail line. The Light Rail provides transportation to the East Valley cities like Tempe and Mesa, and runs through Central Phoenix. GateWay Community College is conveniently located between two Arizona State University campuses – Tempe and Downtown Phoenix – and has access to Light Rail on campus.

Housing that fits all income levels is available around the campus or off the Light Rail line as well.

GateWay Community College has bus and Light Rail passes available at a reduced rate for students. Application forms are available in the Center for Student Life, located in the Main Building on campus.

Things to do/see

GateWay is situated near Downtown Phoenix and local communities like Tempe and Scottsdale. The campus is minutes from the Phoenix Zoo, Botanical Garden, Spring Training Baseball facilities, nightlife, shopping, museums, running, hiking, biking and more. Plus, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is within walking distance to campus.

The Phoenix area is an arid climate, though we do experience rain and on very rare occasions even snow. You can expect at least 350 days of sunshine. Most of the year is mild, usually between 60 to 90 degrees for highs, depending on the season, which lends itself to outdoor activities.
