Milwaukee School of Engineering
Four-Year University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

School of EngineeringMilwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) was founded in 1903 and is a four-year private university located downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin (145 km north of Chicago). MSOE provides a climate for students to become well-rounded, technologically experienced graduates, and highly productive professionals and leaders.

Located on the shore of Lake Michigan (one of the country's five "Great Lakes"), Milwaukee is the country's 19th largest city in the United States with a metropolitan population of approximately 1.5 million people. It is also a business, technological and industrial center, where opportunities abound.

With its large office buildings and extensive transportation systems, Milwaukee has a bustling big-city atmosphere, but it is beautifully tempered by 19th century buildings made of famous pale yellow Cream City bricks and by green boulevards and large parks. Milwaukee offers activities for everyone: shopping, restaurants, professional sports teams, a brisk live-music scene, at least 50 ethnic festivals throughout the year. A vibrant fine arts and cultural community includes a symphony, music groups, ballet company, dance troupes, opera companies, numerous theater companies, a renowned art museum and dozens of art galleries. There is also a renowned zoo, a public museum, IMAX theater, the Domes horticultural conservatory, Olympic skating center, a river walk and a lakeshore with public parks where sailing, kite-flying, rollerblading, biking and walking are popular pastimes. We have more than 70 student organizations.

In 2007, we opened the Grohmann Museum, home to the world's most comprehensive art collection dedicated to the evolution of human work. The museum has three floors of galleries where a core collection is displayed as well as themed exhibitions. The museum also has a rooftop sculpture garden, a vending café and museum store. With nearly 700 European and American paintings and sculptures that depict various forms of work, the Eckhart G. Grohmann Collection Man at Work is the world's most comprehensive collection of its kind. Captured on canvas and cast in bronze, the images reflect a variety of artistic styles and subjects that document the evolution of organized work, from manpower and horsepower to water, steam and electric power. The artworks span over 400 years of history.

Nestled in the heart of all this activity is MSOE's 15-acre, user-friendly campus. MSOE offers 18 undergraduate degrees in engineering, business, technical communication, construction management and health-related fields. Graduate degree programs are offered in engineering, engineering management, environmental engineering, medical informatics, marketing and export management, new product management, structural engineering and perfusion. In U.S. News & World Report's most recent ranking, it ranks MSOE's undergraduate engineering programs 11th in academic reputation.

One of the truly unique features of MSOE's civil engineering (CVE) program is that graduates can receive both their bachelor's and master's degrees in five years. This program is the only one of its kind in the state of Wisconsin. It has been designed to meet the new Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century requirements developed by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). These new requirements call for civil engineers to be proficient in both technical and professional skills. Such professional skills include familiarity with issues of public policy, business and public administration, globalization, leadership, and teamwork. Students graduating from MSOE's five-year "freshman-to-master's" program will meet all these requirements.

At MSOE, civil engineering course work provides a broad-based education touching on each of the traditional areas within the civil engineering field: structural engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, transportation, construction, surveying and geotechnical engineering.

The Architectural Engineering program at MSOE offers three areas of specialization: building structural systems; building environmental systems; and building electrical systems. The program culminates in a major design project in the senior year where students work with real clients creating a proposal, working documents and architectural model. Popular combinations with this degree are MSOE's undergraduate Construction Management program or the Master of Science in Structural Engineering program.

Biomedical Engineering combines engineering expertise with medical needs for the enhancement of health care. Most people have had their life touched by a biomedical engineer - medical equipment from x-ray machines to intravenous pumps and CAT scanners have all been designed and improved by biomedical engineers.

Computer Engineering is the design and application of computer systems, balancing hardware and software by integrating electrical engineering hardware topics with computer science software subjects. MSOE's Software Engineering program is also based on computer science and is concerned with the application of engineering concepts, techniques and methods to the development of software systems. MSOE offers one of only a few such degrees in the region and prepares professionals with a mastery of software development theory, practice and process. Because of the inherently social nature of contemporary software development, communication skills and teamwork are stressed.

The ever-growing demand for new and improved electronic equipment and electrical systems has kept electrical engineers in demand. Digital phones, personal computers and global positioning systems are just a few of the products that electrical engineers have developed. MSOE's Electrical Engineering program emphasizes design projects and laboratory implementation.

Often called the "people-oriented engineering profession," industrial engineers determine the most effective ways for an organization to use its resources - people, machines, materials, methods and procedures, information and energy. The Industrial Engineering program at MSOE revolves around four main areas of specialization: manufacturing processes/automation; quality assurance; operations research/simulation; and ergonomics.

The broadest of all types of engineering and essential to industrial enterprise, mechanical engineering includes the design, development, analysis, control and testing of machines for converting energy from one form to another. Areas of specialization at MSOE include engineering mechanics, energy systems, and materials/manufacturing.

With a 45+ year history of business programs, MSOE's Rader School of Business have traditional business and management backgrounds with the added advantage of a thorough understanding of the technology that drives businesses. Undergraduate programs include Business, International Business, Management and Management Information Systems. The International Business students spend their junior year at a German university, experiencing German culture, traveling Europe and receive two degrees upon graduation, without delaying graduation. Four graduate business programs are also offered.

MSOE's School of Nursing education combines both compassion and technology. Courses in computers, critical care and management principles combine with extensive clinical experience that begins early in the program at a variety of hospitals and community agencies.

Graduates of MSOE's Technical Communication program are expert communicators who bridge the worlds of the creators of technology, often engineers or technical personnel, and the users of the technology.

All MSOE students have numerous opportunities to participate in more than 60 laboratories and research centers located on campus. They receive an average of 600 hours of laboratory experience over the course of four years, including world-renowned technology centers such as the MSOE's Fluid Power Institute and the Rapid Prototyping Center. Help from professors is also easy to access as the average class size is 20 students and the student-to-faculty ratio is only 12-to-1.

MSOE's Kern Center is a 210,000-square-foot recreation, athletic, health and wellness facility that was dedicated October 2004. The center exemplifies MSOE's philosophy of a well-rounded university experience and provides students with ample access to fitness, whether they are participating in NCAA athletics, intramural sports or individual fitness programs.

MSOE students benefit from the 70 student organizations and 21 NCAA Division III teams in men's and women's intercollegiate sports plus intramural and club sports.

MSOE is the right university for those who have a thirst for knowledge, are determined, hardworking and want the edge on technology. For more information, contact MSOE or visit its Web site where enrollment applications are available online.
