Our Lady of the Lake University is located in San Antonio, Texas, the eighth largest city in the United States. The city, and its events and culture, reflects a mix of Mexican, Spanish, German, Irish and English cultures.
OLLU provides a university culture with maximum opportunities to excel in a fast-paced, bi-cultural world. Students can experience a blend of academic choices, cultural and entertainment activities, a diverse student body, traditions stemming from the University’s Catholic heritage and an educational environment that bridges all of the countries in the Americas.
OLLU offers a variety of academic programs and is proud of its close-knit community of students, faculty and staff. With a student/faculty ratio of 14:1, you are ensured a personalized education from dedicated professors. Students graduate from OLLU with a solid academic foundation, a strong spiritual base and the knowledge of how to succeed in a bi-cultural workforce.
When away from the University, students can discover San Antonio’s activities including art exhibits, theater productions and concerts. You can attend a Spurs basketball game, ride a rollercoaster at Fiesta Texas or have dinner and a stroll along the world famous River Walk. And you’ll surely want to be a part of the 10-day Fiesta celebration in April.
Just a short drive from San Antonio are beaches on the Gulf Coast, the Texas Hill Country, tubing on the Guadalupe River, outlet malls in San Marcos and the state capitol in Austin.
Academics, facilities, bi-cultural experience
The University offers 58 undergraduate degree programs, 48 graduate
degree programs and two doctoral degree programs. Degrees are offered
in education, social work, business, leadership studies and a variety
of other areas.
The Sueltenfuss Library combines traditional library resources with the latest in multimedia and information technology. Computer access and labs are conveniently located throughout the campus for student use, and online courses are offered in various academic areas.
Students have access to chemistry and biology labs, a television studio with a closed-circuit TV station, newspaper facilities, space for art exhibits, a sculpture studio, music rooms, the 24th Street Theatre and Thiry Auditorium.
OLLU also recognizes that it is important to learn the necessary skills to succeed in a fast-changing, bi-cultural world. If you’re majoring in business, television broadcasting, communication and learning disorders, psychology or social work, you can choose a dual-language option. Through this program, you’ll take classes taught in both English and Spanish.
Aside from the dual-language option, all programs aim to prepare students for careers that may take them across the borders of the countries of the Americas.
Student life
More than 40 student organizations and extensive activities offer intellectual,
interpersonal, cultural, ethical and physical development. OLLU offers
events like the Calle 24 Annual Fine Arts Series, lectures, career fairs,
performing arts and networking opportunities.
If you live on campus, you’ll make friendships in the residence halls. Stay connected to your friends and family with cable, phone lines and computer network connections in every room. The facilities feature laundry rooms, lounges, patios, vending areas with microwaves and an outdoor pool.
History
OLLU was founded in 1895 by the Sisters of the Congregation of Divine
Providence, a religious order begun in 18th century Lorraine, France.
The order continues as the sponsoring organization of the University.
OLLU has been accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools since 1923. In 1927 it became the
third Texas school to be approved by the American Association of Universities.
