Area and Climate
Hawkeye Community College is located in Waterloo, Iowa. The state of Iowa is in the center of the United States, in the heart of an agriculturally related region. The soil is very rich and conducive to the growing process. The main crops grown in Iowa are corn and soybeans. In addition to the crops, many farmers also raise livestock (primarily cows and pigs). Waterloo is home to several small industries; however, the major industries in the area are John Deere Tractor Works and Tyson Foods Inc. (a pork processor). Two rivers, the Mississippi and the Missouri, located on the East and West sides respectively make up the borders to the state of Iowa. The temperature ranges from 30 degrees Celsius during June, July, and August (summer) to as low as –26 degrees Celsius during December, January, and February (winter). Precipitation falls in the forms of rain and snow with occasional thunderstorms during spring and summer and occasional blizzards/snowstorms during the winter. Waterloo is 270 miles (434 kilometers) West of Chicago and 196 miles (316 kilometers) south of Minneapolis. Waterloo and its adjacent community, Cedar Falls, have a population of approximately 100,765.
Hawkeye Community College Advantages
Hawkeye Community College (HCC) offers international students a friendly environment with a variety of excellent programs. Students can complete the first two years of a four year undergraduate degree and be prepared to transfer to a four-year university.
HCC offers several Technical Applied Science programs which provide the skills necessary for employment immediately following graduation. Transfer to a 4-year college is also available for many of these programs.
We are fully accredited and there are several transfer opportunities (to 4-year Colleges and Universities) available.
Class sizes are small with personal instructor attention.

The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) (which is only 19km from HCC) has housing options for HCC students. Beginning for the fall, 2005 semester, bus service will be available from UNI to HCC! You can have the benefit of the lower tuition rates and the University living experience!
ESL courses will be offered beginning fall 2005.

International Student Admission process
- Fill out the “International Student Admission Application” stating the specific program you are interested in attending.
- Choose the “Deposit of Yearly Costs” option and follow the directions.
- Fill out the “International Student Data Sheet” and return with the Application.
- Have your TOEFL results sent to Hawkeye Community College’s office of Admission by ETS; our code is 6288.
- Obtain an official copy of your high school and college (if applicable) transcripts and have them sent directly to Hawkeye Community College.
- Pay your deposit for mandatory health insurance.
- After you have been admitted and received the form I-20, pay the SEVIS fee PRIOR to your visa appointment. See the “SEVIS Fee Payment Instructions” document for assistance.
This is the process for both the ESL courses as well as the academic programs. The required TOEFL scores between 330 and 429 will be placed in ESL courses, scores falling between 430 and 499 will be placed in limited Academic courses and ESL (to be determined by the advisor and ESL instructor), scores of 500 or above will be placed in unrestricted Academic courses (an assessment may be required upon arrival)* with the exception of Math, a separate assessment may be required to determine appropriate placement.
*We reserve the right to assess students upon their arrival regardless of any submitted transcripts or TOEFL score(s).
